Preserving Memories in Collage
Debbie Musick is a self-taught artist and life-long Oklahoman, descended from early settlers of the Choctaw Nation. This sense of place infuses her art, which encompass hand-lettered text of hard-won wisdom, vintage images of homesteaders and homebodies, and authentic artifacts, remixed and reimagined on heirloom textiles. The resulting mixed-media works explore the layers of everyday life in the American West, past and present, in a tapestry of disparate threads, laughter shared, and stories remembered.
The flag pictured above was a new project I learned at the North Texas Collage Conference in Ft. Worth, TX, earlier this month. I chose to use images from my friend's beautiful book, The Salt of the Red Earth, as my stars. The flag measures 48" x 30.5". It is a huge project, with each stripe and star constructed separately .
